Paul Weller is Paul Weller's first solo album, released in 1992. After disbanding The Style Council and leaving label Polydor in 1989, Weller formed The Paul Weller Movement in 1990, releasing a single, "Into Tomorrow", on his own Freedom High record label, in October 1991. Its success - reaching in the UK chart - led to Weller being offered a new record deal with Go! Discs, and the resulting album was released on 1 September 1992, reaching on the UK album chart.

Paul Weller, singer-songwriter. In 1981, I was going through a few changes. I was taking note of what was going on in our country. He had a Four Tops album on a reel-to-reel, which was a tape you could record over. So when I was learning guitar, I actually taped myself playing over Walk Away Renee. Derek was really annoyed! But all this goes in, subconsciously, and I rediscovered it through Paul. The Malice bassline is very similar to You Can't Hurry Love by the Supremes, but it worked. When we hit that groove, you couldn't stop your foot tapping. It becomes a bit of a haze. We recorded the track at Air Studios in Oxford Street, London. and knew it was a winner. We thought a lot about these details.
19 CARNATION From The Jam album, The Gift (released March 1982). A scathing critique of Thatcherism. If the piano-heavy arrangement reflects a growing discomfort with the limitations of a three-piece, the lyric is Weller at his most withering: Hold my hand and be doomed for ever. Liam Gallagher: The Jam are all right, but I was too young for them. I like Weller now. Oasis were in Sweden, I think, with Ocean Colour Scene, and we were pissed. Highest chart position: 15 Written from the perspective of an alien teleported into Oxford Street, Weller allows countless time signature changes and a lyric namechecking Mr Sheen to climax in the musical equivalent of a street fight. Craig Finn, The Hold Steady: For Americans, The Jam’s music is very British.
Producer, Design – Paul Weller. Producer, Mixed By – Brendan Lynch. Recorded at the Manor, Oxford, England.
Paul Weller - Broken Stones. The Stanley Road album is named after the Woking street where Weller grew up, and this nostalgic song looks back at the changes that take place across a life, like pebbles tossed around on a beach. The Style Council - You’re The Best Thing. When Weller called time on The Jam in December 1982, he collaborated with keyboardist Mick Talbot of Mod revivalists The Merton Parkas and singer Dee C Lee to form The Style Council. The band continued Weller’s interest in soul - and this sweet love song is one of his best. Weller didn’t feel the lyrics meant much without the music, so the track snuck onto side 1 of the classic album All Mod Cons in 1978 without getting a mention on the cover. The Jam - A Town Called Malice. Taken from The Jam’s final studio album The Gift, this swirling soul track was issued as a double A-side single with Precious and another Number 1 hit for the band.
