Duke Ellington and John Coltrane. This is a type of best of both worlds in terms of jazz for me right here. By 1962, Coltrane had settled in with what would be known as his classic quartet which lasted for four solid years. This quartet featured Jimmy Garrison on bass, Elvin Jones on drums, and McCoy Tyner on piano. For this recording, Tyner opted to step aside and let another legend tickle the ivories. Duke Ellington, is of course, known for being one of the best and most prolific big band leaders and pianists in jazz. The album was very truly a spiritual awakening in many ways and demonstrates what can happen when a gifted musician gives themselves to their music. Please listen to all of these albums! Condition: Used: Very Good. Item not in the original case. When Duke Ellington took his orchestra to the Newport Jazz Festival in 1956, the band was in need of an uplift, some humongous event that would revitalize its image in the wake of bebop, hard bop, and so many more jazz currents. The songs are especially well chosen - from Black and Tan Fantasy, to Take the A Train, to Mood Indigo and Skin Deep, these are some of the best of the best. As great as the songs are, the performances will really make you up sit up and listen. I would highly recommend this album for any Duke Ellington fans because it has the famous Diminuendo & Crescendo in Blue single where there was a 27 encore 'finish' that ascended the music to a dizzying heights that has not been rivaled since.
