I think, this album is a turning point in Elliott's works. The whole atmosphere changes right from here: depressiveness and gloominess dissolve, making way for feeling of freedom and happiness. This album gives a "second wind", a breath of fresh after sitting in stuffy room. The songs i can mark out as the best one's are: "Son Of Sam", "Somebody That I Used To Know", "L., "Wouldn't Mama Be Proud" and "Can't Make A Sound". Listenning to the album is recommended. Figure 8 is the fifth studio album by Elliott Smith, and the final album he completed before his death. It was recorded from 1998 to 2000 at numerous studios and released on April 18, 2000 through DreamWorks Records. Even an Oscar nomination. You might think these considerations would bring a modicum of contentment to Elliott Smith on his fifth solo album, Figure 8. But you’d be underestimating the exquisite purity and commitment behind his perpetual bummer. No mere improvement in personal fortunes will change Smith’s bargain with listeners: to provide ruthless, sad-eyed insight swathed in melodies that the Beatles would not disown. His music reaches out with contours and cadences that promise the sociability of a singalong

Figure 8 is the fifth studio album by American singer-songwriter Elliott Smith, and the final album he completed before his death. Steven Paul "Elliott" Smith (1969 –2003) was an American singer, songwriter, and musician. Smith was born in Omaha, Nebraska, raised primarily in Texas, and lived for much of his life in Portland, Oregon, where he first gained popularity. Smith had trouble with alcohol and other drugs throughout his life, while suffering from depression, and these topics often appear in his lyrics. In 2003, aged 34, he died in Los Angeles, California, from two stab wounds to the chest. The autopsy evidence was inconclusive as to whether the wounds were self-inflicted. At the time of his death, Smith was working on his sixth studio album, From a Basement on the Hill, which was posthumously completed and released in 2004.
